Expansion
The Speed Art Museum was recently expanded, allowing the museum to accommodate additional exhibitions and programs. The new space will house expanded special exhibitions, new contemporary art galleries, a family education welcome center, a 150-seat cinema, and an indoor/outdoor cafe. There will also be a multi-functional pavilion with outdoor sculptures and a public piazza.
The expansion will provide an additional 220,000 square feet of exhibition space. The new building will also include a public piazza and art park. Additionally, the museum will add new facilities for collection care and research. A new museum theater will feature independent American films. The expansion project was not without its challenges. Much of the fundraising for the project was already done when d’Humieres took over. The museum was able to raise $50 million for the new north wing. The museum also received a generous donation of $18 million from the Owsley Brown II family, which helped the museum realize its expansion plans and keep costs down from the original $79 million cost estimate.
